Cyberattack Hits Supermarket Refrigeration Systems Across Europe

In the early hours of November 2, 2026, cyber attackers targeted supermarket refrigeration equipment in Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg and other European countries, remotely raising temperatures in refrigerated units to 50 degrees Celsius and causing food to spoil.

The incident is the second large-scale attack following an October attack on supermarkets in France. Both targeted a particular refrigeration control system, highlighting the risk that remote access to cold-chain equipment can translate directly into food losses.

Where the disruption can spread

The immediate impact falls on food stored in affected units. Depending on the extent and duration of a temperature change, retailers may also need to assess other exposed products before they can be sold. The consequences for inventory and store operations will depend on how widely the equipment was affected and how quickly temperatures were restored.

The recurrence also raises a broader question for operators using the targeted control system: whether a problem affecting connected refrigeration equipment can be detected and contained before it reaches additional units. Further details about the affected equipment, the scope of the attacks and how access was gained will shape the assessment of the risk.
