Internet-connected refrigeration equipment used by French supermarkets has reportedly remained exposed to serious security vulnerabilities for months. Security researchers found that 85% of the devices were running software with known vulnerabilities, while 527 were using discontinued Danfoss controllers. Only 195 devices had been patched.
The issue gained immediate operational significance after a cyberattack during the night of October 11–12, 2026, caused refrigeration equipment to warm up. Most of the affected devices had reportedly been exposed to the internet for at least six months.
Refrigeration systems are directly linked to the storage conditions of temperature-sensitive goods. The reported warming event shows that a cyber vulnerability in connected equipment can create a physical operating problem, rather than remaining limited to data or network access.
The figures also point to two separate difficulties. Known software vulnerabilities have not been addressed across most of the identified equipment, while the use of discontinued controllers may make long-term remediation more dependent on replacement or other hardware-level measures. Internet exposure over an extended period further increases the time available for attackers to identify and target vulnerable systems.
In the short term, the key concern is whether additional refrigeration units could be affected and whether the impacted equipment can be patched or isolated quickly. For supermarket operators and equipment managers, the incident puts system exposure, software support status, patch coverage and the operational consequences of a temperature change in the same risk picture.
The broader impact will depend on how quickly the affected devices are secured, whether unsupported controllers are replaced, and whether further warming incidents are reported. Official announcements, company disclosures, authoritative reporting and relevant industry or regulatory information may clarify the scale of the incident and the measures taken in response.
Based on the current information, the event highlights a clear weakness in the management of connected refrigeration equipment: keeping systems online without current software support can turn a maintenance gap into a direct disruption to store operations. The extent of any wider impact remains dependent on subsequent remediation and evidence of further attacks.
