A recently reopened supermarket in Wiesbaden, Germany, says it is the first to use CO2 (R744) refrigerant across all its commercial refrigeration, heating and air conditioning equipment, according to Cooling Post.
The scope of the installation is the central point of interest. The reported use of CO2 extends across the store’s cooling and heating requirements, making the site a practical reference for retailers considering natural refrigerants throughout a supermarket. The claim to be the first remains the supermarket’s own assertion.
For retailers and equipment suppliers, the case raises questions that go beyond the choice of refrigerant for individual units. Applying R744 across these functions could shift attention toward how equipment is specified, operated and maintained across the whole store. It does not, by itself, establish whether the equipment shares a single integrated system.
The installation offers a reference for supermarket decarbonization discussions in Europe and elsewhere, but its broader value will depend on operating results. Energy use, maintenance requirements and performance across different heating and cooling demands would help retailers assess whether a similar approach suits their own sites. Full adoption of CO2 establishes the scope of refrigerant use; it does not alone demonstrate lower total energy consumption or a quantified reduction in emissions.
